BSTF AGM 2010 - Minutes
The BSTF committee would like to thank all students, instructors and Masters that attended the AGM on Sunday 31st October at Aston University, Birmingham. The meeting was highly constructive, enabling students and committee members to discuss the current issues surrounding student Taekwondo in the UK.
One particular point was raised to ensure minutes from the AGM and subsequent committee meetings were made openly available. This has been actioned by making the AGM minutes accessible via the BSTF website (click here). Future committee meeting minutes will also be posted here.
Once again, thank you for your participation at the AGM. Good luck with your studies and happy training!
BSTF AGM 2010 - Update
The venue for the AGM has been confirmed at Aston University, Birmingham (Room 108, Main Building). If you would like further information or would like to propose an item for the agenda, please email the BSTF account.
BSTF AGM 2010
The BSTF AGM will take place on Sunday 31st October 2010. The provisional location for the event is Birmingham, although full details will be finalised shortly. The BSTF committee would like to invite all students, and others, involved in university taekwondo to attend.
At the AGM, students have the opportunity to raise any issues they have with regards to student taekwondo. The BSTF not only aims to provide competitions and training to all university taekwondo students in the UK, but also to assist clubs in any way possible. Hence, your feedback (positive or negative) is greatly encouraged!
If you want to help out in the running of the BSTF, why not put yourself forward for a committee position? Email the BSTF account if you have any questions (student.taekwondo@googlemail.com). We look forward to seeing you!
Master Moon Training Seminars
The training Olympic Gold Medals are made of...
Master Moon Dae-Sung can be described as many things: 5th Dan, Olympic Gold Medallist, PhD, International Olympic Committee Member, WTF Special Representative, Korean Olympic Committee advisor, the man who scored the one knock-out kick which quite possibly kept Taekwondo in the Olympics, etc...! But one thing you may be surprised to know is that he is very keen on grass-roots sport and university Taekwondo.
Although he is flying in and out of the country to train national teams and attending sports conferences, Master Moon took special time out of his busy schedule and asked current and former BSTF committee members to organise a tour of universities in the UK in order to train with the students and coaches that make up the current university scene.
It wasn’t easy to organise, with only 5 weeks to arrange everything for the one week Master Moon could make available, and that one week for many universities being right at the end of the exam period, the start of the summer holidays, and the very week 3 out of 4 of England’s World Cup 2010 matches took place! Nonetheless, the turnout was astounding with over 180 students training with Master Moon at four events up and down the country. For those events that booked up early, there were many more students who turned up simply to watch and meet such a great man.
Individual university committees and instructors were contacted, and the great and unique nature of university Taekwondo allowed for venues, insurance and attendance to be provided and accommodated for at very short notice. The whole event was run at cost at the insistence of Master Moon who was adamant that he will not receive a penny so that the price may be kept as low as possible. This was in order to allow the greatest possible participation of students in acknowledgement of the unique circumstances of university sport and university Taekwondo in the UK as well as those of the students themselves...
Students from the following universities attended the various events:
Bournemouth, University of Kent at Canterbury (UKC), Southampton, Southampton-Solent, Portsmouth, University of West England (UWE), Bristol, Surrey, University of East London (UEL), Oxford-Brookes, Kingston, University College London (UCL), King’s College London (KCL), Nottingham, Durham, Glasgow.
The BSTF hopes that this is the first of many university and student based events of truly international calibre, and that others may take notice of the importance and high regard that university sport (and particularly university Taekwondo) is held internationally.
Iranian Kick Pads - Update
The BSTF are pleased to announce that the Iranian Kick Pads previously advertised (see article below) have been ordered, manufactured and delivered. We will be in contact with those clubs that placed an order and aim to distributed the pads as soon as possible.
Iranian Kick Pads
The BSTF will be making a large order for Iranian Kick Pads in the next few weeks (pad dimensions - 40 x 24 x 10cm). The pads were extensively used during the BSTF Easter Fight Camp 2010 and provide an extremely valuable aid for training. See sample images below (click to enlarge).
The cost is dependant on the overall quantity ordered. At present, each pad works out at approximately £26-28. However, this price will drop if the overall request for pads increases. Manufacture takes around 1-2 weeks and a further 1-2 weeks for delivery to the BSTF. Therefore, pads should be available 2-4 weeks after the order is processed.
If your club would like to make an order (minimum 3), please contact the BSTF email account (student.taekwondo@googlemail.com) by Friday 21st May so the order can be processed this academic year. Clubs are asked to ensure that they can commit to their orders before expressing an interest.
Please provide the following details:
1. University club
2. Contact name
3. Contact telephone number
4. Contact email address
5. Quantity requested
Delivery of pads to your club can be arranged in several ways. An additional charge will be required if you wish for the pads to be posted to you (to be arranged on individual basis). Otherwise, pads will be distributed amongst the various BSTF committee members for delivery to nearby clubs.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Easter Fight Camp 2010
It was that time of the year again... students from around the country were invited to attend a weekend of Taekwondo training at the Stoke Mandeville Olympic Stadium, Aylesbury (Friday 30th April to Sunday 2nd May) - the BSTF Easter Fight Camp 2010.
Unfortunately, the timing of the event (the only weekend around the Easter vacation that the BSTF could book in advance) meant that many were unable to attend due to university course commitments, including exams. Nevertheless, a smaller than normal group of enthusiastic students ran, jumped, kicked and punched their way through three days of Taekwondo training with a number of internationally recognised masters.
The daily training was started with early morning fitness and flexibility work. This was followed by a further two gruelling sessions of drills, pad work, sparring and poomsae, as well as instruction regarding up-to-date WTF sparring rules and a detailed massage lesson. Spirits were high despite the different feel to the event, not only due to reduced numbers but also the absence of the extremely well-respected Master Suh Ki Young, who tragically passed away earlier in the year.
Students socialised between sessions, including a visit to a Chinese restaurant on the Saturday evening for an ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet, which was well received by all. By the end of the weekend, a combination of aching muscles, a sense of relief and a heightened passion for Taekwondo were the primary topics of conversation, with many new friendships made. The BSTF would like to thank all those that attended, especially the instructors, for helping make the event a success.
We look forward to welcoming university students to yet another BSTF Fight Camp next year!
